Building of this monumental building began in 1638. and lasted for a century. The project of the church for patron of city Rijeka relied on the existing Venetian church of Santa Maria della Salute. The church interior is dominated by marble pillars and altars that are reminiscent of the fact that the city of Rijeka with has the most marble Baroque altars on the east coast of the Adriatic. In the church there is a crucifix that is connected to the legend of Peter Loncaric. He threw a rock in anger at the crucifixion, and then the body of Christ flowed the blood that was preserved in a vial.
In 1925. Rijeka became the center of the diocese, and in 1969. and the center of the archdiocese and metropolis. The representative Jesuit church of St. Vida has become the cathedral of Rijeka.
