Trakoscan was built in the 13th century in the northwestern Croatian defense system as a small observation fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj prma Bednja Valley.
According to legend, Trakoscan was named after (arx Thacorum) that allegedly existed in antiquity. Another legend says saved, that is named after the knights Drachenstein who in the early Middle Ages these areas.
Toponym was first mentioned in written records 1334th year. Masters works in the first centuries are not known, yet we know that from the late 14th c Counts of Celje, that the entire Zagorje County. The family soon became extinct, and Trakoscan shared the fate of other cities and their possessions, which were divided and changed owners. In this division Trakošćan as a unique property, belongs to the first army leader Jan Vitovcu, then Ivanis Korvin, who gave it to his deputy warden John Gyulay. The family kept the castle for three generations, and became extinct in 1566th, and the estate takes over the country.
For his services King Maximilian gave the estate to Juraj Draskovic (1525-1587), first personally, then the family heritage. So finally 1584th Trakoscan Draskovic family.
In the boom period of construction of castles in the Croatian Zagorje region, in the second half of the 18th century, Trakoscan was abandoned. Neglected, it begins to deteriorate rapidly, and only half of 19th century, the family re-interested in its estate, in the spirit of the new time, a romantic return to nature and family traditions. In this spirit, the deputy marshal Juraj V. Draskovic in a residential castle, while the surrounding park was turned into Romanticist pleasure grounds. The next generation of occasionally staying at the castle until 1944. when they immigrated to Austria soon after the castle was nationalized.
