Croatian historian and the first rector of the University of Zagreb. Canon.

Matija Mesić (Brod na Savi, 19 February, 1826 - Zagreb, 6 December, 1878)., Croatian historian and the first rector of the University of Zagreb. After completing his studies of theology, history and geography in Vienna and Prague, he returned to Zagreb in the time of awakening national consciousness under the influence of the Illyrian Movement and the Gaj's Illyrian Danica newspaper. He made a critical edition and Poljice Statute Acte croatice of John Kukuljevic, arranged Krčelić's correspondence and records of Stanko Vraz. His contribution was invaluable to Croatian historical science, precisely because Mesic's thanks to a multitude of documents preserved in our ancient history.
