ŽMINJSKI KAŠTEL
If in Europe, all roads lead to Rome, then in Istria, all roads lead to Žminj, the center of Istria and the old intersection.
If in Europe, all roads lead to Rome, then in Istria, all roads lead to Žminj, the center of Istria and the old intersection. In the 15th century castle was built, probably a square-shaped. It is certain that the eastern rampart had two towers, and may have two similar defended the western wall, while the inner courtyard of the building consisted of leaning on the walls. With the building adjoining the south wall was erected in Holy Trinity Chapel, painted by an unknown master 1471sth. Zminj was an important stronghold, primarily because as the Austrian fortress stood opposite to that of the Venetian Vincenti. In preparation for conflict with Venice, the Austrian Archduke 1612th held in Žminj about 200 pedestrians. The crew of Žminj during the War from the 1615th to the 1618th often attacked the Venetians, destroying crops, especially hay, which are transported from the port in Fažana and Svetvincenat, so because of the lack of hay Venetian horsemen were almost powerless. But, as usual, in January 1617th a traitor secretly brought Venetians into the castle. For this service, he received a lifetime salary of six ducats a month, but in fear for his life, he moved to Crete.
