
BENKOVAC
Town of Benkovac is built at the junction of the fertile fields of Ravni kotari and karst area of Bukovica. It is surrounded by 5 National Parks and 3 Nature Parks. It was one of the imprtant Liburnian and later Roman settlements in northern Dalmatia - Asseria, so it is historically higly important.
The most attractive location in the immediate vicinity of Benkovac certainly Asseria - abandoned and destroyed Liburnian and Roman settlement at Podgradje, some 6-7 kilometers from Benkovac. Asseria arouses interest from the time when the end of the 18th century Venetian traveler Alberto Fortis, full of enthusiasm for the Enlightenment, zdvajao of the reasons for its collapse and, prompted by a favorable purchase of an ancient tombstones, forged plans to return there once, "provided the necessary equipment for digging." Late 19 century, namely 1898th , in Asser came from Vienna, and archaeologists have been executed by the first professional excavations, and its remnants in the early 20th century, visited and described by our famous poet and travel writer Anthony Pavicic Tresic. Systematic archaeological research in Asseria done since 1998. and led to many interesting insights about life in this city long ago disappeared.
