Fort Lawrence, also known as the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik, the fortress is situated near the western external wall of Dubrovnik, 37 meters above sea level. The fort is famous for its performances and weddings, and most importantly as a historic symbol of resistance to the Venetian republic. During the battle of Dubrovnik and Venice, Venice had planned to build a tower in the same place where Lawrence now stands. Had they succeeded, they would have under control but Dubrovnik Dubrovnik them, having learned of their plan, to forestall it. Dubrovnik chronicles reveal that the people of Dubrovnik in just three months, and Lawrence were built when the Venetian ships arrived, full of construction materials, they were ordered to retreat back to Venice.
