
KORČULA ISLAND - MARCO POLO ISLAND
Korcula is the island with the most legends and monuments and along with Lokrum and Mljet is also the woodiest island in Croatia.
Stone knifes from Neolithic period prove that the life on the island of Korcula dates back to prehistoric times.
In the 6th century BC old Greeks came to Korcula and settled themselves in the area of Vela Luka and after that came the Greeks from the island of Vis (known as Issa in the old times) and settled around the area of Lumbarda.
In the 1st century Korcula shared the same faith as the rest of Dalmatia – it became a Roman colony and it was called Illyrica. During the 7th century Slavs (Croats) came to the cost of the Adriatic Sea and established their own state and Korcula was a part of it.
They say no island has more legends or monuments than Korčula, and it is also the woodiest island in Croatia along with Lokrum and Mljet. oday, the island of Korčula represents a unique fusion of beautiful nature, thousands of years of cultural tradition and history, and modern tourism. Numerous beautiful beaches and bays, luxurious hotels and summer houses, centuries old olive groves and vineyards, and ancient towns and villages on the island which seem as if they have remained lost in some long past time attract tourist from all over the world to this island.
