The Osijek area has been inhabited since the old stone age, and archaeological finds from the area Retfala talk about the first inhabitants of these areas before 8000 years. However, the archaeological site at which the Osijek is far more recognizable it was a little younger and is located right along the Drava River, in what is now the Lower Town.

Osijek is the largest city in Slavonia, on the banks of the Drava and the seat of the county of Osijek-Baranja, making it an administrative, industrial and cultural centre. The oldest part is Tvrđa, a preserved Baroque centre, whose central square is dominated by Kužni’s pillar. Here there is the Museum of Slavonia and the Archaeological Museum, galleries, churches...
