EARLY CHRISTIAN THREE-NAVE BASILICA AND CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF TARAC IN THE NATIONAL PARK KORNATI
Very interesting building from the Byzantine era is the Early Christian basilica, which is located at the foot of the fort Tureta, and which is still visible most of the apse and the foundation. Given the size of the church (30 x 13 m), it is assumed that at the time of the Kornati Islands were significantly inhabited. Near the church (in today's sheep-fold), there are traces of the foundation of a building which is doubt whether it was a Templar monastery or Benedictine monastery. It is interesting to Kornat throughout the Middle Ages was called names like Insulae Sanctae Mariae, Stomorin island and the like, precisely at this church (St. Mary's Church).
Dating from the Middle Ages a very interesting cultural buildings in the park, among which is certainly the most impressive church of Our Lady of Tarca. The modest one-nave sacral buildings (rural Late Romanesque church) was built on the site of an early Christian basilica was built and probably the remains of the old church. During the construction of Our Lady of Tarca is not entirely clear, so the assumption that there is a 12/13th. century, 14, and 15th/16th. century. In this church and Masses are being held today (every first Sunday in July), whose importance has grown purely religious event and become part of the tourist attractions of this area.
